Vlassis Holevas

Men express their love for a woman’s curves in many ways the world over, but in the case of European designer, Vlassis Holevas, it’s his vibrant and sensual designs that best celebrate the curves of the female form.

“The female body is characterized by curves,” proclaimed Holevas, whose work also will be featured in the Bridal Issue of Beverly Hills Report. “Every curve of the female body can be an inspiration and a guide to the final design. The curves of the female body are what we men love and these curves are a form of inspiration for my designs.”

First pouring onto the mainstream fashion scene in 2005, Holevas has created a reputation for himself as a lover of fine fabrics and flowing freedom of femininity in his designs through the use of fine silks, lace and more. “I always work with fabrics from France, Italy, Switzerland; I particularly like to use silk in all of the types of fabrics that I use,” explained Holevas. “It is the silk quality that embraces the body of a woman in the most amazing way. Usually for my summer collections I like to use silk chiffon and silk satin because they are light for the warm weather and very flowing. For my winter collections two of my favorites are silk taffeta and silk crepe. Most seasons I like to use French laces either as a whole dress or as a little decoration on a dress — lace always adds in femininity.” Born in Vienna, Austria, to an Austrian mother and a Greek father, Holevas grew up in Athens, Greece, and attended a top private school in Greece where, “Art was always viewed as an important part of life,” he said. “I guess this, and my mother, who is a designer as well, were the inspirations for me becoming a creator myself.”

Upon viewing Holevas’ creations, it’s obvious the man has a flair for drama and eccentricity in his work. When asked what his most extravagant designs have been, for whom they were made and how much they retailed for, Holevas mentioned there are three such extravagant pieces that stick out in his career thus far.

“The first one was created for the Greek Music Awards and was worn by the presenter Maria Bakodimou,” he described. “It was the first year of the war in Iraq and I wanted to remind people generally what war is about, so I printed on a t-shirt (it covered both sides) ‘Guernica,’— Picasso's painting that is displayed on the wall of the United Nations building in New York and is a well known symbol against war. Then I made a white balloon with draw string effect skirt from material for parachutes and threw red paint on it to show how blood spills when someone is shot. It took me three weeks to make it, and it made quite an impression. I never intended to sell this creation, so there is no price on it.

“My second most extravagant piece was made for Joyce Girraud and her glamorous Oscar appearance two years ago,” he continued. “It was a beautiful, fuchsia silk shantung strapless gown with an opening on one leg that made the dress flow. The skirt was full with little pieces of pleated organza all hand made that gave a dramatic effect. It took me almost a month to create it and it retails for $12,000.00.”

The third of Holevas’ most lavish creations, he said, is a long, strapless, fully hand beaded gold gown with an opening on one leg that was not made for anyone in particular. That gown, Holevas said, took him almost three months to create and it retails for $18,000.00.

As a man who strives to make women feel celebrated and luxurious in his designs, Holevas has his own thoughts on life’s luxuries.

“Luxury is the unnecessary necessity that makes us feel and live better,” he said. “In my world, luxury is about the best materials that I use and about the way I want my clients to have the experience of the custom made (sur mesure) and the exclusivity of my designs through private appointments during my trunk shows.”
